 Watching the [Misery]
« Thread Started on Feb 2, 2008, 2:34pm »

Sightless, but not weak.
Complications made me stronger.

The morning sun rose slowly over the trees. The wind lightly yanked the brush and leaves. The ground was cold, covered with small drops of dew. Faintstar padded quietly to a bare area.

Already, he could smell the traces of prey, running everywhere. Patiently he waited for his apprentice, Miserypaw, to arrive. His apprentice was quiet most of the time and the leader often wondered if that was a good thing.

A small twig broke suddenly from underneath a bush. Out of habit, the blind tom crouched and followed the noise. Soon, he was able to take in the strong stench of the mouse, unaware of its defeat. Even blind, the leader was capable of pin pointing the exact location of his prey.

A small pounce and the mouse lay dead at his feet. He buried it and continued waiting for the apprentice to arrive...

Miserypaw slowly padded into the clearing. Dew still clung to her fur as the grass that were bent from all the training in this part of the wood. She shook her pelt to fling off the dew. She hated the morning. Not only was it cold, but it was wet. Sighing, She walked over to her mentor. Nearby she saw a small dug up mound where prey was held. They would probably hunt today, but the back of her mind still wished they could just learn fighting everyday. But that was not possible. In order to be strong she had to be able to hunt. Another reason was feeding the clan, but that didn't comfort her much. She would rather just be able to care for herself, not be anyones pawn. The only reason she stayed was to learn, and that is what she would do today.

"Faintstar, what are we doing today?" she mewed in her still pre-mature voice. She looked into his sightless eyes, wondering how he continued to hunt and fight as any other cat. Well not just as well, but better. This always confused her. A question left unanswered got under her skin. She just wish she could know everything! But she was just barely into her training, so sadly, she had to wait.

The small mew of the apprentice slightly started the leader. "Hello Miserypaw." he nodded in her dicrection, "We will be hunting today." The large tom padded up to the apprentice and flicked his tail behind her, "Let's start right away."

Faintstar's whiskers twitched at the sound of prey. His sightless eyes trailed into the distance, "Tell me what you smell." Faintstar sat and relaxed. There was plenty of prey around and hardly any of it was well hidden in this area.

Miserypaw nodded. Just what she suspected, hunting. Hopefully after this she could fight. Her eyes closed and she parted her mouth slightly, to catch the scent of prey on the gentle wind. After a few seconds she opened her eyes. "I smelt mice, a thrush, and a vole," she said in an even tone. She knew there were more than one mouse, but she couldn't tell exactly how many. Hopefully she would perfect that soon.

Yet she tried to specify anyways. "Are there two mice or three?" she asked, embarrassment welling up inside her at the fact that she wasn't sure. It was a good thing she was an apprentice, otherwise she still would be lost at even the thought of distinguishing mouse from squirrel. Yes it was good. But she knew she would be expected to stop learning sometime. That time was daunting. She didn't ever want to stop. Knowledge meant power. Power meant success. Success, well she left it at that. She looked at her mentor, waiting for him to respond.

She's good, Faintstar thought. His sightless eyes scanned the clearing as he picked up the scents she traced. She was right, there was a thrush, a vole, and even mice. "There are two" he said, amused. "As you hunt more, you will be able to tell how much prey there is. If the scent is stronger, obviously there are more."

The leopard tom stood and stretched, "Now," he got into an example crouch, "Creep lightly on your front paws, and heavily on your back. You want all your power in your hind legs so you can pounce." He rocked back and forth to show the difference in body weight. His tail was level to keep his balance as he did so.

Miserypaw watched his example silently. Her eyes scanned over him, trying to memorize every movement, every twitch under his pelt. Anything that seemed important she snapped to take not of. 'the tail is kept low, to not startle prey and unbalance yourself,' she mentally noted, seeing how he kept it low. She too crouched, low to damp ground. She kept her tail low and her weight on her back paws like he instructed. She started to waver in her balance though and sat down to save herself the embarrassment of falling.

After that she tried again, even crawling forward a bit. Her breath was slow and deliberate, to calm herself so she wouldn't try to catch a mouse at that very moment. She looked at her mentor. "Is this good?" she asked, trying her best to mirror her mentor, "am I ready to hunt?" Her paws itched, an excitement flowing into her veins. She could kill in this pose. Prey, but its the first step. Also if she ever thought she could survive without the fresh kill pile she would need to hunt well. her breath sped up. She flexed her claws in anticipation of the catch to come.

Faintstar smiled slightly. The anxiety in the apprentice's voice made him shift uneasily. Being blind, he wouldn't be able to tell if she did it correctly until the apprentice actually tried. Silently he nodded.

"Go ahead and continue." he whispered. "Be quick, but don't dive into the prey. They aren't as dumb as you may like to think." Amusment and anger showed in his sightless eyes as he remembered the first time he tried to hunt. His senses were stronger than any other cat, but his blindness almost made him stupid. His first prey, a vole, was staring right at him and he didn't know. Faintstar brought his attention back to his apprentice and waited patiently as she hunted.

Miserypaw Smiled at the chance to hunt. She crouched down and scanned around her, looking for any movement in a bush, or any snaped twig. She heard a fallen leaf crunch and she slowly turned her head to look at what had made the noise. A mose. Her breath quickened, and her entire body tingled in exitement. She flexed her claws and the little heard poked put of the leafs then ducked back down.

Then Miserypaw suddenly pounced from her crouch onto the unsuspecting prey. It heard her and started to scurry away, trying to flee into the nearest hole. But she was definitly faster than a mouce. Her paw swiped down and pinned down the mouse. It squirmed, trying to break free of its captors hold. But she finished it off with a quick bite. She smiled. Now that was fun. Funner than any game she had watched others play before. "I caught it!"she exclaimed, a hint of happieness leaking its way out of her. Happieness was a rare thing to come out of her mouth, but evry thing is possible. She tilted her head in thought. It hunting is this fun, how fun would fighting be.
